If food is your passion and cooking is your thing, and you would love an opportunity to showcase your skills and add to your CV - why not consider entering Petroc Chef of the Year Competition 2018?  You have nothing to lose but everything to gain!

The competition is open to ALL Petroc full-time and part-time catering students from Barnstaple and Mid Devon campus, and all Petroc work-based learning students.

The Process

Complete an application form outlining your menu ideas – it’s that simple!

And to help you with this, our very talented chef lecturers plus industry guest chefs will be hosting application support workshops in January 2018, which you will ALL have an opportunity to attend.

Completed application forms will be sent to our judging panel (the highly-acclaimed Michelin-starred chef Mark Dodson and Nigel Yeo from Philip Dennis Food Services) and the successful applicants will be notified in February 2018.

Responding to previous year’s feedback, all entrants will receive individual feedback about their written entry.

Meet the Judges

"I have always found the winner to be a chef with an exceptional talent, who is well-organised and most importantly with a great palate. It has been my pleasure to work together with the winners on previous occasions to produce a meal of outstanding quality."

Having spent 12 years at the three-Michelin-starred The Waterside Inn, Bray, as Michel Roux’s Head Chef and three years as Executive Chef at Cliveden, Taplow, Mark decided to spread his wings to Devon. He and his wife Sarah bought the 13th Century Masons Arms, Knowstone, in 2005. The accolades have followed, including a Michelin Star, first awarded in 2006 (six months after opening) and retained ever since. In 2008 the Masons Arms was named as North Devon’s Best Restaurant; in September 2009 Michelin chose it to be its 2010 Pub of the Year; and in 2011 it was named as North Devon’s Best Pub. Ten years on, the pub has gone from strength to strength and now, with the help of the internet, it has become a global local!

“I feel privileged to be a finalist in the Petroc Chef of the Year competition. I’ve since joined the Kentisbury Grange team as a commis chef and was promoted to the pastry chef. I was also a finalist in South West Chef of the Year and I enjoyed this immensely. This came from the previous experience of being entered for the Petroc Chef of the Year.

Initially I was quite simply terrified! Having only ever worked a few shifts within the kitchen, my hospitality career had been predominately working front-of-house.

The support offered from the college, my family and my employer was great. I learnt loads and met some really great people. Being part of the competition has given me great confidence in cooking.

Two-and-a-half years down the line, I am now running my own kitchen. Without wanting to sound cliché, ‘you don’t know unless you try!’
